I want horribly pining Derek.
Like, an AU though, where the Hale family is still alive but Derek is still a brooding mass of uncommunicative muscle because his Uncle Peter died trying to stop Kate Argent.
But anyway, that’s not the point of this. The point is, Stiles becomes Derek’s dad’s personal assistant because Mr. Hale works in the DA’s office (as the head honcho? Who knows) so he has a pretty good relationship with the sheriff, you know, as they commiserate over cases, stuff like that.
Well, anyways, Stiles is on his freshman year at community college and he has no clue what he wants to do (other than putting away bad guys) so the sheriff decides, hey, be a criminal prosecutor! And intern with one of my good friends! It’ll keep you out of trouble AND you’ll learn something!
So yeah. Stiles then starts working for Hale, following him around the office, doing his personal chores, and even, occasionally, going to his home.
AND DEREK SEES HIM AND OBSERVES HOW SMART AND WITTY AND ADORABLE AND LOVELY AND LOYAL HE IS. Yes. So Derek pines, hard.
And the pack of course notices it, calls him out on his blatant crush, the way he’ll visit his dad’s office a lot more, the way he’ll linger in the rooms when Stiles is over, the way he’ll try to catch a sniff of Stiles’ aroma whenever he can, even if it means hanging on to his dad because he’s the only one who interacted with Stiles that day. And Derek’s family, they’re happy. Because Derek hasn’t ever expressed this kind of interest in anyone since Kate, and they’re so relieved that he’s finally moving on.
But the fact of the matter is, it’s been years since Kate, and even then, he was the one being pursued. He doesn’t know how to grab anyone’s attention so he’s incredibly awkward about the whole thing to the point where it causes Laura and his family to physically wince.
He’s rude when he tries to be charming, he’s quiet when Stiles tries to talk to him (too nervous), he’s obnoxious in the way he tries to impress Stiles (it seems more like bragging, more “oh hey, I have a better car than your hunk of junk” than “oh, look, I have a stable job and enough income to financially support you and keep you at higher-than-average living standard, please consider me for a life-partner”), he seems arrogant and prideful when really he’s just clueless about what to say, and Derek even manages to insult Stiles’ friends once when he got incredibly jealous at the proximity between the two. It drives his family mad, seeing the horrible train crash happening before their very eyes.
AND STILES, omg, STILES is just so self-conscious and self-aware about his flaws that he can’t fathom the idea that Derek likes him. Imagine, please, the way his self-esteem would be if he had gone all through high school pining away for Lydia only to be forever ignored? Not even like in the show, where he got her friendship, but just flat-out ignored.
So Stiles takes it in stride, the way that Derek Hale can’t seem to stand the sight of him, despite Stiles’s major crush (his first since Lydia) And why would Derek? Lydia never looked at him twice, and Derek was in the same category of “unattainable and untouchable”. So Stiles learns his lessons and doesn’t bother even giving a hint of his feelings for Derek, because it’s a done deal that it’ll never happen, and it’ll only end in humiliation and heartbreak if he does.
MEANWHILE THE ENTIRE HALE PACK ALL SIMULTANEOUSLY FACEPALM BECAUSE OMG OBLIVIOUSNESS.
